Freedom of the press is part of the five main freedoms represented in the first amendment of the constitution of the United States. The constitution was ratified in 1791 putting freedom of the press in full development. Since then many cases have evolved with this freedom, and the freedom had some role of developing future amendments and technology in modern day. Freedom of the press had a history even before its ratification, it helped to solve many court cases, and is used throughout modern times. First of all, this is the definition of freedom of the press from lawbrain.com. Freedom of the press guarantees the rights, â€Å"to gather, publish, and distribute information and ideas without government restriction or restraint†. Also it is guaranteed that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the press. There have been many critics that said there is no difference between freedom of speech and freedom of the press. It was a key issue and was not resolved until the late 20th century. Burger in 1978, there is no difference between freedom of speech and freedom of the press unless; â€Å"the courts or the government determine who or what the press is and what activities fall under its special protection†( Burger). Compensation and Security for Employees

Discussed in this paper will be how employees are categorized and at what level they are categorized at. What the goals and expectations for each level are and how they can be reached. How compensation is dispersed and awarded and how the compensation is given. This paper will also discuss what kind of compensation is given, whether the compensation is monetary or in another form. This paper will also discuss what the incentives will be for reporting abuse of other employees or violation of company policies and procedures. The steps that the company will take to keep all incentives for the different categories and employees fair and equal. What kind of payouts for the different performances in each category. The paper will also include a section on why the compensation is awarded and how they will reward the employee or group (Snell, 2010). How to set the program to handout the incentive and when they will be awarded and how. It will also discuss whether the incentive is given yearly or if it is given quarterly. Also in the paper it will discuss how to motivate employees and how to keep employees motivated. Read this  Chapter 2 – Why Security is Needed Also being discussed will be putting in a compensation plan to attract new employees. Knowing how to manage unfairness and employees who think it is unfair to offer an incentive for a particular performance or for an organization. Putting the steps in categories will also help out the unfairness. Also being discussed is how the compensation will be presented. What steps will be taken to ensure that all employees are eligible for the compensation program. Giving the steps out so the employee knows what is to be expected. Compensation and Security for Employees Some companies have different levels of employees; some include entry level employees to executives. Categorizing employees is a little difficult, especially if there is a lot of turn over. Some employees that have been in the company for more than a year may still be in an entry level position, but deserve to be at a junior level position. The main purpose for this program is to ensure a low employee turnover. These employees should be compensated not for their position but how they perform in that position (Snell, 2010). Other companies may give a bonus or compensation for getting hired into the company. Bonuses are given mainly in monetary fashion; they are given also if the employee is at the company for six months or more. Categorizing employees is a big job, but also can save on money. Categorizing employees from entry level to CEO is difficult especially if there are several levels. The first step is to categorize employees is to know how many employees are in each level. Also included in the first step is a description of what each employee level is. How many employees there are in each level and how they get the incentive in the level. Level 1: entry level- fifty employees, these employees are the ones that have recently been hired, or have been with the company for six months to a year. Frequent turnover accrues with in the first two months of hire (Snell, 2010). That is why an incentive is give after the six month in the position. Level 2: junior level- thirty employees, these are the employees that have been with the company for a year or more a monetary incentive is usually given after the employee has given their commitment to the company for a year and a half. Level 3: lead level- twenty employees, these employees are the leads in their units or departments, they have been promoted from the junior level and have worked for the company for more the 2 years. The first incentive is the promotions; they also get an incentive for job performances in the first six months after becoming a lead. Level 4: supervisor level- fifteen employees, these employees have also been leads that have been promoted (Ederhof, 2011). Supervisors have worked for the company for four years or more. The incentive for this level is after a year of being a supervisor. The supervisory level compensation will be based on job performance, and the supervisors past performances. Level 5: manager level- forty employees, these employees are either hired for the manager level or they have been promoted from the supervisor level. These employees are committed to the company. Their incentive is for job performance, going above and beyond the call of their position. Level 6: Coordinator’s level-seventeen employees, these employees are listed as high as executives. These coordinators are budget coordinators, financial coordinators, company event coordinators. These employees are hired outside the company; they are hired for their skills of coordinating several departments. These employees know how to work through stress and deadlines. This level compensation is based solely on performance; there is still the six month compensation after hire. Compensation shows how they work through the stress and deadlines (Ederhof, 2011). Level 7: director’s level-ten employees, these employees are also hired outside the company; they have the skills and experience to do their job. These employees are responsible for several departments and the employees that work in those departments. The directors are higher than the managers. This is where deciding how the compensation will work for the remaining levels will get a little more difficult. They also are goal oriented and will make goals for the departments they run (Reh, 2013). Level 8: Administration Assistant’s level: five employees, these employees are usually hired outside due to unfairness of the other employees. The employees have four to five years’ experience in the field. Administrative assistants work directly with the CO’s and presidents. Their work is monitored above any employee in the company. Their stakes are higher when it comes to incentives and compensations. This is not an entry level position. Level 9: CO’s level- twelve employees, these employees have specific areas of experience. Some of the CO’s that would be in the company are: Chief executive officer (CEO) chief accounts officer (CAO), chief information officer (CIO), chief financial officer (CFO) to name a few. There is about eight to ten years’ experience in their field. Their goal is to keep things in their department running smoothly. Level 10: presidents level five employees; this level is the most difficult level to do incentives and compensations. They are the highest and most experienced in their areas. This level of employment makes all final decisions in the company. They work closely with directors in each department; knowing what is going on throughout the company is another objective that this level is kin on. Setting goals and expectations for the different levels is not as easy as it seems. The upper levels will have more difficult goals and expectations to achieve than the lower levels. This is the second step in the incentives and compensations plan. Anything that needs to be discussed about each level should be discussed with each level in a conference or a meeting (Super Jobs for You, 2009). Get the employees involved in their goals and expectations. Setting goals and expectations are very important, it keeps employees motivated and looking forward. Level 1: goals setting and expectations for the entry level positions. Sitting down with the level 1 employees the company found out that some of the goals are pretty similar. Having the employees set goals for themselves will help the employees achieve realistic goals and set short and long term goals (Goals and Expectations, 2011). Goals for entry level employees would include: to move up in the company, to have projects done on or before the deadline, being able to type 50 words per minute every day for a month. Bring job performance up to five percent in two weeks. Another goal would be win over customers that have not been in for a while. Achieving this goal would be for each level one employee. The goal would be to get back 3 customers within sixty days. Some personal goals for employees at level one is: being able to speak up in meetings, get along with co-workers better, to talk to their superiors a lot better without being terrified of being rejected. Level 2 employees have the same goals as the level one employee with some differences. Some goals that level two employees have set for themselves are as follows: wanting to move up in the company, get sales up to ten percent before the next quarter. The incentive for reaching the customer goal would be a hundred dollars and free lunch on the company for 3 employees of level one and three employees for level two. Some of the incentives for the level one employee, once they have achieved their goal, would be a promotion with a pay raise. For finishing a project before the deadline would be a fifty dollar bonus on their next check. Level two employees would be the same, a promotion and a pay raise. Once they achieve their goal of getting sales up the company will give incentive for the first three employees who reach the goal. The incentive will be a week vacation with pay. For level 3 employees the goal setting is a bit more complicated. Some goals could be: having their department reaches a team goal within thirty days. A team goal could be to increase communication through the entire department. Also getting employee feedback from the departments to reach the specific goal (Goals and Expectations, 2011). Giving out monthly progress reports to level one and two employees, telling the employees how they are doing and where they are to achieve their own personal and professional goals. Once the communication goal is reached by one department the entire department will get fifty dollars on their next paycheck and will get a free lunch to a great restaurant on the company. For the level three employees the incentives for reaching goals and expectations would be a week’s paid vacation from the company for achieving the progress report goal for the first 4 employees. This goal is also available to the level four employees also. For level 4 employees they will also make up goals for themselves as well. Some of the goals would be figuring out how to relieve the stress from their employees to increase productivity and performance. How to keep employees from going home early or calling in sick from work on Fridays. Some suggestions would be giving the employees free massage on their breaks, giving a longer lunch hour on Fridays. Setting and posting team goals that are simple and are seen everywhere. Level 5 employees personal goals could be to get out on the floor to help out lower level employees about sixty percent of the day for the next sixty days. The department goal could be to develop a plan to keep more employees from quitting and to lower turnover by fifty percent. Whichever level achieves this goal will get a twenty-five percent raise. The levels that will be competing will be levels four, five and seven. Levels 6 employees will have goals and expectations to fulfill. Some goals and expectations could be to stay up-to-date on advertising until the end of the year. Plan a company event three times a year. The big goal is to talk to customers about what they want out of the company, or what they want to see the company change and make it happen within six months. Achieving this goal would get the coordinator responsible a thirty percent raise and 2 weeks paid vacation. For the entire company goals would be an award of their choosing for working in the company for five, ten, fifteen and twenty and so on years. The awards would be for five years a plaque that says for five years of service in the company and would have the employees name on it. The ten year anniversary would be an award of their choosing, like a stereo or two hundred dollars cash. Every year would have an award that is a little more expensive and elaborate. For reporting violations and abuse to co-workers the incentive would be the same hundred dollars for reporting sexual harassment, reporting a violation of the code of conduct would award the employee with a free membership to the gym of their choice or ten free massages for two. For referring new employees the employee would get fifty after the new employee was hired and hundred after the new employee was at the company for six months. Steps that the human resource management will take to ensure that all compensation and incentives are fair and equal to all levels. Step one is to figure out different higher goals for each employee at each level. Keep goals short-term. Let all employees at the lower level know they have the potential to achieve all goals and expectations. Also let them know they lso have the ability to be promoted wit in the company. Also letting all employees know that they are valued in the company. Giving out â€Å"treats† to all employees at the end of a really long work day or work week. Company parties, picnics or celebrations, to let the employees know they are valued in the company. Celebrating the employees birthdays, to let them know that the company remembers them and that they are special. Before reading this chapter the term abnormal only reflected the one end of a spectrum ( Manic-depressant, etc.). Abnormal was defined by me as someone who â€Å"freaked† me out. It was the extreme bottom that triggered the word abnormal to me. Webster’s dictionary defines abnormal as anything from the norm. Using this definition leaves a lot open for interpretation. This definition makes it appear that someone who is above the norm is than also considered as abnormal. But what is the norm? Theoretically, the average IQ for a person is roughly around 100. If someone was to have an IQ of 120 is that person then considered abnormal? Members of the House of Representatives There are 435 members of the House of Representatives. Federal law, passed on Aug. 8, 1911, determines how many members are in the House of Representatives. That measure raised the number of representatives to 435 from 391 because of population growth in the United States.   The first House of Representatives in 1789 had only 65 members. The number of seats in the House was expanded to 105 members after the 1790 Census, and then to 142 members after the 1800 headcount. The law that set the current number of seats at 435 took effect in 1913. But it isnt the reason the number of representatives has been stuck there. Why There Are 435 Members   Theres really nothing special about that number. Congress regularly increased the number of seats in the House based on the nations population growth from 1790 to 1913, and 435 is the most recent count. The number of seats in the House has not been increased in more than a century, though, even though every 10 years the census shows the population of the United States grows. Why the Number of House Members Hasnt Changed Since 1913 There are still 435 members of the House of Representatives a century later because of the  Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929, which set that number in stone. The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 was the result of a battle between rural and urban areas of the United States following the 1920 Census. The formula for distributing seats in the House based on population favored urbanized states and penalized smaller rural states at the time, and Congress could not agree on a reapportionment plan. After the 1910 census, when the House grew from 391 members to 433 (two more were added later when Arizona and New Mexico became states), the growth stopped. That’s because the 1920 census indicated that the majority of Americans were concentrating in cities, and nativists, worried about of the power of foreigners, blocked efforts to give them more representatives, wrote Dalton Conley, a professor of sociology, medicine and public policy at New York University, and Jacqueline Stevens, a professor of political science at Northwestern University. So, instead, Congress passed the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 and sealed the number of House members at the level established after the 1910 census, 435. Number of House Members Per State Unlike the U.S. Senate, which consists of two members from each state, the geographic makeup of the House is determined by the population of each state. The only stipulation spelled out in the U.S. Constitution comes in Article I, Section 2, which guarantees each state, territory or district at least one representative. The Constitution also states that there can be no more than one representative in the House for every 30,000 citizens. The number of representatives each state gets in the House of Representatives is based on population. That process, known as reapportionment, occurs every 10 years after the decennial population count conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. U.S. Rep. William B. Bankhead of Alabama, an opponent of the legislation, called the Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 an abdication and surrender of vital fundamental powers. One of the functions of Congress, which created the census, was to adjust the number of seats in Congress to reflect the number of people living in the United States, he said. Arguments for Expanding the Number of House Members Advocates  for increasing the number of seats in the House say such a move would increase the quality of representation by reducing the number of constituents each lawmaker represents. Instructions for OpenStack

Instructions for OpenStack OpenStack is an arrangement of free and open-source software tools that is utilized for controlling substantial pool of compute, storage and networking resources managed through a datacenter which is overseen through a dashboard that gives head control while permitting their clients to spare assets through a web interface. Since OpenStack is overseeing distributed computing platform for both public and private cloud, it is supported by a portion of the greatest organizations and also a large number of individual group individuals. For creating an instance in OpenStack we need to use the URL cloud.ncirl.ie. To access the cloud compentency centre there is an option for OpenStack. We need to click on that option. A login page will appear where the Domain name is ncirl, we need to put login details like username and password. After login we can check the Instances, VCPUs, RAM, Floating IPs, Security groups, Volume and Volume storage etc. if any previous instances is there we can also check those. In order to create an OpenStack Instances we need to create Key pair. To create key pair we need to select Project à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Compute. In Compute options like Overview, Instances, Volumes, Images and Access Security. In Access Security we choose the second option Key Pairs. In Key Pairs there is an option create key pair, we have to choose that option. Inside create key pair we have to enter the desired key pair name and click on the option Create key pair. A .pem file will be downloaded to the system, which is used to login to instance using putty. The second step is to click on instances à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ Launch instance then a pop up appears where we have to put an instance name. Available zone is nova and count should be 1. We need to select the source for the instance, we select boot source as image and the required operating system can be Ubuntu 14.04. Now we need to select the Flavor, the required flavor is m1.large. In network tab we select private_default. We dont have to make any changes in network port. In security group tab we select default and http-8080. In key pair we have to select the key pair which was created earlier. In configuration tab we have to paste the shell script for cloud from: https://docs.openstack.org/developer/devstack/guides/single-vm.html. Now on clicking the launch instance an instance will be created. Now we have to associate a floating point IP to the instance so that it can be accessed from outside the cloud. The third step is to go to Puttygen and load the .pem file to generate a .pkk file to access the created instance by windows operating system. Now go to Putty and paste the floating IP in the host name bar and then we add the private key which is .pkk which was earlier generated using Puttygen, now click open. I command prompt will appear to the created instance where login details is required like username and password. The username is Ubuntu and password is password. After login we have to verify whether the username is stack or not by using the command line cd ~/../stack. Now we have to check whether the script got completed by using tail/var/log/cloud-init-output.log. The final step is to open the browser and type the floating IP associated to the instance in the address bar. An OpenStack dashboard will appear where we have to input the username as admin and password as password. An OpenStack horizon will appear where we need to go to Project à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ Compute à ¢Ã¢â‚¬  Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Overview to get the following screen. Personal experience while creating instances in OpenStack While creating key pair I saved the .pem file on my local folder in my system. While generating instance, I faced a problem of getting three IP address on the same instance. I tried for three times each time deleting the previous instance and creating a new one, finally got a single IP on the third try. To make instance visible and for usage we need a floating IP address, but due to limited floating IP it was very difficult to get an IP for my instance. In Puttygen I had to load the .pem file and generate .pkk file which is a private key for windows user. Then after I had to open the putty and type the floating IP address in Host Name session. After that I had to prompt .pkk file from Auth inside SSH.The other issue was after creating .pkk file I was not able to access the command prompt for instance, then by getting guidance from Dr. Ralf Beirig in lecture and only then I was able to overcome this issue. After accessing into cloud I checked the user stack by giving commond line   cd ~/../stack to check whether stack is present or not in home folder then I gave command line of tail /var/logs/cloud-init-output.log to show the status of current script. In the URL, I pasted my floating IP and could access the OpenStack horizon by entering username as admin and password as password.

MARION PRITCHARD Marion Pritchard was born in Amsterdam, Holland in 1920. Her father was a judge who treated her with love, respect and caring. Her mother lived in Britain. Marion would visit her mother who resided there. Marion watched the German invasion on May 10, 1940, and as anti-Semitic laws were passed, she told her Jewish friends to escape or to hide. Her father was not Jewish; however, he was disappointed that the Dutch government did not do more to help Jewish refugees. As Hitler rose to power she watched many children being thrown into trucks which encouraged her assist in the rescue effort. Marion remembered two soldiers joking about picking up small children by the arms, legs, and hair, and tossing them around. In 1942 she took in the Polak family and hid them in a tiny space under her living room. Her friends would give her milk and other healthy foods to feed the Jews. One night a Dutch police officer acting for the Nazi regime knocked on her door very early in the morning. A neighbor had reported that she was hiding a Jewish family. She knew she would be sent to a concentration camp along with the Polak family if they were found. Marion believed that it was either the officer or the children, and so she shot the officer. Afterwards, a gay Jew ballet teacher took the dead body out of Marion’s house at night and took it in a cart to the undertaker. The undertaker put the officer’s body in a coffin which was soon to be buried. Marion was lucky that the police officer was not missed. She hid over 150 people from the Nazis but some Jews were found and killed. The Nazi army murdered about 110,000 of the Netherlands’ 140,000 Jewish citizens. After the war was over the Polaks came out of hiding. The mother who had been separated from the Polak family was reunited with them. Marion decided to work for the United Nations relief and Rehabilitation Administration’s Displaced Persons camps to find her Jewish friends.

abstract expressionism It was a full 170 years after Americans had their political revolution that they won an aesthetic revolution. American art to get rid of its inhibiting mechanisms- provincialism, over-dependence on European sources, and an indifferent public- and liberate itself into a quality and expressive force equal to, or exceeding that of art produced anywhere within the period. Few would argue that the painting and sculpture that emerged from the so-called New York School in the mid 1940s was the foremost artistic phenomenon of its time and was labeled as the Abstract Expressionist movement. Abstract expressionism was a reaction to social realism, surrealism, and primitive art in the 1940s; this is a turning point in American art history because it caused the rest of the art world to recognize New York as the new center of innovation. The movement synthesized three other previous art forms. Social Realists "socially grounded" activist art of the 1930s responded to the disaster of the economy in America and the rise of fascism abroad by working in socially conscience styles. "This art form was contaminated by the cliches of the Stalinist popular front" (American Visions p. 469). Abstract expressionists responded to these art forms by deriving their new style from personal experience and by embodying this in contemporary forms, instead of getting their ideas from politics. The influence of Surrealism in The Abstract Expressionist Movement was its stress on the power of the unconscience as the most fertile ground of imagery. The expressionists valued the Surrealist style because it revealed the action of the dreaming mind and valued the accidental and the involuntary: "It welcomed the image that rose unbidden from a chaos of marks" (Modern Art 3rd Ed, p. 265). It also valued the American surrealists' sense of m ission. Their belief that art and life was inseparable heartened American artists who felt marginal, ignored by other Americans and felt provincial with respect to Paris. The Abstract Expressionists also used "primitive" art as a way of cultural escape. They looked at tribal artifacts in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and believed it was disclosing one of the main buried roots of modernism. Cave paintings especially influenced many Abstract expressionists such as Pollock and Rothko. Although anticipated in Impressionism, this- the so-called "holistic" composition- was something new in modern art. The emergence of the Abstract Expressionist in America had a profound effect on the rest of the art world because it relocated the center of the art world from Paris to New York. Many factors caused America to be the new center of Creativity. Political and economical causes such as the Great Depression and world war II, as well as former artistic genres such as Surrealism, Social Realism, and primitive American art influenced the Abstract Expressionist new style. LGUs Warned For Late Class Suspension Announcement Essay

MANILA, Philippines — Malacaà ±ang told local government units (LGUs) that the late announcement of class suspension in some areas on Tuesday should be the last time it should happen, reminding LGUs of their responsibility to announce class suspension as early as possible. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte also asked the public to be more patient with LGUs because of the new system that transferred to the LGUs the responsibility of ordering the suspension of classes which was previously the function of the Department of Education (DepEd)â€Å"We are giving them a little more time to cope with the new system and we hope that this will be the last time,† Valte said. She said it would be up to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to impose sanctions on LGUs that failed to announce class suspension on time during inclement weather. According to Valte, local governments should make the announcement as early as 4:30 a.m. â€Å"We will be asking for a little bit of your patience because it is a new system and our LGUs would also need to get used to that system, but again we would like to remind them as well as a reminder from the DILG that the responsibility of suspending classes in your locality is now with your local chief executives,† she said. Valte said the responsibility of announcing class suspension was given to the local governments because the DepEd, which used to announce the suspension of classes, also gets information from LGUs whether or not to have class suspension in their respective areas. Valte said they had noticed the numerous complaints aired by the public in various media outfits on the late class suspension yesterday. She said DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo has vowed to remind LGUs of the new protocol.Valte said President Aquino is continuing to monitor the weather and flood situation, particularly in Metro Manila and nearby areas. Classes were suspended in most parts of the metropolis yesterday due to heavy rains which caused flooding in major thoroughfares. Valte, however, said there was no suspension of work in government offices. Based on the DepEd Order, Signal No. 1 will permit the suspension of classes in public and private pre-school and kindergarten classes in the affected areas while Signal No. 2 allows for the suspension of elementary and secondary classes. At Signal No. 3, classes in all levels are cancelled. LGU officials are supposed to announce cancellation of classes not later than 4:30 a.m. for whole-day cancellation and 11 a.m. for afternoon class suspension. Meanwhile, two dams in Luzon reached their critical water level due to continuous intense rains over the watershed areas yesterday, the state weather bureau said. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hydrologist Max Peralta said one spillway gate of Ipo Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan had been releasing excess water since yesterday morning. As of 11 a.m. yesterday, Ipo Dam’s level reached 100.75 meters, or 0.11 meters lower than its spilling level of 100.86 meters. â€Å"Before 10 a.m., two gates were opened. Only one gate remains opened due to less rains over the area,† Peralta said â€Å"Water released from the Ipo dam is at 48 cubic meters per second. This is quite minimal and may not flood the downstream communities near the Angat River,† he explained. Likewise, water level in La Mesa Dam in Quezon City remained critical at 79.52 meters, as of 11 a.m. yesterday. This was 0.63 meters short of the 80.15-meter spilling level Dam authorities have already issued a red alert for possible flash floods among communities near the Tullahan River. Communities that may likely be affected by flooding are Fairview, Forest Hills, Quirino Highway, Papri, Goodwill, Sta. Quiteria, and San Bartolome in Quezon City, Barangay Ligon along North Luzon Expressway in Valenzuela and Malabon.â€Å"We have recorded continuous rains over the watershed area until Tuesday noon. From 12 noon last Monday to 12 noon on Tuesday, 108 mm rains have been recorded, which is considered intense rains,† Peralta said. Meanwhile in Malolos, Bulacan, Liz Mungcal, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) chief, reported to Bulacan Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, that at around 7 a.m. yesterday, the Ipo dam began releasing water at 109 cms per second. Mungcal said as a result the Bustos Dam released 120 cms at around 9 am. Also yesterday, adding that this amount of water released was safe and tolerable and would not be felt by the community. PAGASA-Weather Branch assistant chief Rene Patient said light to moderate rains will continue to affect Western Luzon today, Wednesday. â€Å"Rains will be scattered and light to moderate as the low pressure area (LPA) continues to move away from the country. Improving weather condition can be expected this Wednesday but Bataan, Zambales, Cavite, Mindoro, Batangas, and Metro Manila will still experience scattered rains,† Paciente explained. â€Å"We have experienced moderate to heavy rains early morning on Tuesday until the afternoon, but we can expect that light to moderate rains will prevail on Tuesday evening. Rains will continue to subside until Wednesday,† he added. The LPA was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 60 km northwest of Ambulong, Batangas or 50 km west-southwest of Manila yesterday morning.Paciente pointed out that the heavy rains were caused by the LPA, â€Å"packing more rains than winds. â€Å"Because it does not have enough wind to enhance the southwest monsoon, it was just the LPA that brought rains over Luzon,† he pointed out. The Media Affairs Division (MAD) of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport recorded three turn-around flight services out of Manila because of the weather disturbance, as of 12 noon yesterday; the MAD had recorded flight cancellations between Manila and Naga City as well as Mani la and Busuanga in Palawan. The management of Cebu Pacific cancelled a turn-around flight between Manila and Naga and a flight between Manila and Busuanga. At the same time, Air Philippines also cancelled a turn-around flight between Manila and Naga, with both airline companies citing bad weather as the cause of the cancellations. Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DoH) warned against the possible upsurge of leptospirosis as floods inundated parts of Metro Manila yesterday. Leptospirosis is an illness brought about by animal urine that enters the body through the eyes, nose, mouth and open wounds. Leptospirosis is characterized by flu, headache, red eyes, jaundice, and difficulty in urinating that may lead to acute kidney failure. Dialysis is usually given to those who are suffering from acute kidney failure. â€Å"Those who were exposed to contaminated flood waters get sick of leptospirosis one to two weeks later,† DoH Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag said. â€Å"Leptospirosis outbreaks after floods occur within a month and may continue for several months,† he added. According to the Disease Surveillance Report of the DoH, leptospirosis cases from January 1 to May 26 reached 1,728 which are 211.35 percent higher than cases recorded in the same period last year, 555. Cases were highest in Northern Mindanao and Western Visayas. There were 75deaths reported within the said period. â€Å"Ages of cases ranged from less than two months to 93 years old. Majority of the cases reported were males. Most of the cases belonged to the 21 to 30 years age group,† The surveillance said. â€Å"Leptospirosis has low case fatality rate. However, it changes with advancing age and may reach 20 percent more in patients with jaundice (yellowing of the skin) and kidney damage who have not been treated with renal dialysis,† the report added. Leptospirosis without complications can be treated with antibiotics for a week. Afternoon classes yesterday in Marikina City, Pasig City, Pateros and Taguig City, in both public and private elementary and high schools, have been suspended by local officials due to the continuous rains. In Marikina City, Paul Sison, chief of the city’s Public Information Office (PIO), said Mayor Del De Guzman ordered the suspension of afternoon classes in both public and private schools in pre-school, elementary and high schools in Marikina City, due to the prevailing bad weather. However, the suspension of classes in the college level was left by the local city government to the discretion of school officials. According to the PIO, there are a total of 17 public elementary schools 14 public high schools in the city. Private elementary schools numbered 50 while there are 29 private high schools in the city. The local city government added that despite the continuous rains, the water level at the Marikina River as of 9:15 a.m. Tuesday remained normal. According to the PIO, the water level at the river was 13.9 meters above sea level based on the data gathered from the alarm gauge located at Barangay Sto. Nià ±o. Meanwhile in Pasig City, classes in both elementary and high school levels were also suspended by the local city government due to rains. In Pateros and Taguig City, the schools division superintendent of public schools in both areas also declared the suspension of classes in both public elementary and high schools for the afternoon shift. Acting Malabon Mayor Antolin Oreta declared the suspension of afternoon classes in most areas brought by flooding that submerged all low-lying areas of the city yesterday. Oreta announced the suspension of classes in 16 elementary schools and two high schools in at least 14 barangays at 10 a.m. He likewise directed the local Disaster Risk and Reduction Unit to prepare for possible evacuation of families living along danger zones such as in West Riverside, Tullahan River, and Dona Juana Riverside all in Barangay Potrero.In Rizal province, the rains prompted local officials to suspend classes in schools in their respective localities yesterday. In Cainta, Mayor Ramon Ilagan ordered the suspension of afternoon classes from preparatory to high school levels for both public and private schools yesterday. The ACEM Montessori School located at Karangalan Village in Cainta suspended classes ahead of the local government’s announcement since the streets outside the school are flood-prone during heavy downpour. In Antipolo City, Mayor Danilo Leyble ordered the suspension of classes from preparatory up to high school, both private and public before noon yesterday due to heavy rains.Reli Bernardo, information officer of the Rizal provincial government, said flood-prone localities have been monitored for possible evacuation or assistance by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council upon the directive of Rizal Governor Casimiro â€Å"Jun† Ynares, III. Meanwhile, heavy rains that spawned floods in Metro Manila forced the Supreme Court (SC) yesterday to suspend work in all trial courts, the Court of Appeals, the Sandiganbayan and the Court of Tax Appeals starting at 1 p.mCourt Administrator Jose Midas P. Marquez said the suspension of work was based on a directive issued by Acting Chief Justice Antonio T. Carpio. The SC suspended its work starting at 3 p.m. According to Marquez, a 2010 administrative order issued by the SC â€Å"grants executive judges of trial courts outside Metro Manila to suspend work for their employees in the absence of an announcement from the national or local government and under certain circumstances so long as it is in line with existing rules and procedure. â€Å"He said judges have been instructed to report to the SC immediately any damage that may be wrought by the bad weather on court offices, equipment and records, and injuries that may be incurred by court officials and employees. The Senate was also forced to suspend work due to the heavy rains yesterday. Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile issued the order allowing employees of the upper chamber to go home early so as to avoid being trapped by floods that inundated most parts of the metropolis. Though there were no scheduled public committee hearings, Enrile advised those with transactions at the Senate to postpone their plans. The Senate also closed public assistance center yesterday. The three of us tore out of the chapel. As soon as we left the Richards' estate grounds we were plunging through woods. Saplings stung our legs as we pitched downhill through the wet night, and tall pines blocked whatever moonlight might have slipped between the clouds. If we had been human, our feet would have surely skidded on the forest floor of decaying leaves. Unable to see more than a yard or so in front of us we would have crashed into the giant trunk of a tree. Instead, we moved like predators, coursing through the night like vampires had for hundreds of years: streaking through the wilds to the next village of potential victims, chasing down someone who had foolishly separated from the herd and decided to travel at night by himself. It felt good to be racing this way, with a few ounces of human blood zinging through my veins. I was almost able to lose myself in the flight, forgetting about what it was we were fleeing from. Then there was a noise. It started out like the beginning of a long roll of thunder, climbed into a crescendo of inhuman groaning, and ended in a screech of despair. The noise was everywhere, filling our ears, the valley we were descending into, the sky above us. The three of us stopped, startled by the sound. â€Å"Well, I guess the vampire is free,† Damon huffed. â€Å"Margaret – † I began. â€Å"Trust me, she's fine. Did you see what she did to him?† Damon pointed out. â€Å"What is she, though?† I asked. â€Å"A witch.† â€Å"Like Emily?† I wondered, my theory confirmed. Was the world simply full of witches, vampires, demons, and who knows what else, most of which were invisible to human eyes? â€Å"I had a feeling there was something different about her when I couldn't compel her†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Damon explained. â€Å"So I asked. And she answered. Pretty straightforward, that one.† â€Å"So she†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"Cast a protective spell around herself and her family, and was burning his brain meats with some mental ability or other to buy us a little time. Emphasis on the word little,† he added. â€Å"Hope that protective spell is still up.† There was another roar. â€Å"Keep moving,† Lexi ordered, and we began again. The woods grew blacker as if nature herself dreaded his approach, and we could feel the earth tremble with his every footstep. Damon and I leaped over a giant log, and for one fleeting moment our motions were perfectly synchronized. But then the three of us came to skidding halt at the edge of a cliff that looked out over all of upper Manhattan. â€Å"Huh,† my brother said doubtfully, peering over its edge. â€Å"We'll have to find some other way down,† I said, starting to look back the way we came. â€Å"A path, or†¦Ã¢â‚¬  With a cry, Lexi hurled herself over the edge of the cliff. I watched her, wide-eyed with horror. â€Å"Find another way down?† Damon said, shaking his head disappointedly at me. â€Å"Still thinking like a human, brother.† And he dove after her. I swore under my breath, watching him disappear into the branches below. Then I followed. As frightening as that fall was, there was something very freeing about it. I was weightless, swimming through the air. The world whistled through my outstretched fingers and hair. It almost felt as though I were flying. I smashed down through thick leafy canopy and rolled into a ball, eventually coming right side up with a twisted ankle that reset itself almost before I noticed it. Damon and Lexi were standing still. She had her head cocked, listening to the strange quiet we suddenly found ourselves in. â€Å"He lost us,† Damon said, triumphantly. â€Å"He didn't realize we went down the cliff! He's†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"He's in front of us,† Lexi breathed, eyes widening. The silence to the south was in fact complete, as if every living thing had quieted or died. We waited, unsure what to do, though it was hard to say for what. Then came the sound of a single blade of grass bending and breaking. â€Å"RUN!† Lexi screamed. We took off. I made the mistake of looking behind me. What I saw and what I heard didn't match up; on the one hand, it briefly appeared that an older man was following me with surprising swiftness. But the shadow cast by the moonlight was of something far bigger and inhumanly shaped. Bushes and trees fell and crashed out of his way before he even touched them. I doubled my pace. We had no choice but to head south. The woods thinned and civilization began to rear its ugly head: a lonely, last farm, a cluster of abandoned holdings, a large estate, a hotel, dirt roads to paved avenues still crowded with horses and carriages and cabs and people even in the middle of this night. And behind us, gaining power from every shadow through which he passed, was the old one. We turned a corner around a fruit stand, knocking down baskets, and the stench of decay that issued from his raggedy breathing mouth was hot on my neck. We dashed through a slum, avoiding clotheslines and open pits of raw sewage, and he was there, throwing aside things and people to get to us. When we thought we had pulled ahead, twisting through narrow alleys and confusing side streets, we could still feel his Power, his frustration vibrating through the night. Lexi led us, and whether it was her own Power or a familiarity with the city, she managed to find just the right fire escapes to leap to, just the right piles of garbage to roll over. Perhaps this was not the first time she had fled from a demon of this stature. â€Å"The seaport,† she hissed. â€Å"It's our only chance.† Damon nodded, for once having no trouble taking orders from someone else. We made our way to the west, to the avenues bordering the mighty Hudson. Lexi's eyes suddenly narrowed and she pointed. A clipper ship, a pretty shiny blue vessel just pulling away from the dock, filled with all sorts of New York goods to sell overseas. With a mighty leap Lexi cleared the water between the dock and its deck, arms poised in the air like a cat leaping upon its prey. Damon and I followed suit, silently landing on the dark deck. By the time we recovered ourselves she was already compelling a shocked sailor who had seen the manner of our arrival. â€Å"We're on the manifest. My brothers and I have a berth below. We did not just leap aboard†¦.† Damon surveyed the ship with interest, pleased with his new locale. I looked back toward shore. There stood a single, innocuous-seeming man leaning against the rail of the wharf, pale as if he had sucked all the moonlight into himself. He stood casually, like he was just there to watch the ships come and go. But the look in his eyes was deadly and eternal – and unforgiving.

This report also focused on two main questions to be answered which is regarding on the evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of Kejora Bhd.’s control environment. Another question is regarding on the factors in Kejora Bhd.’s control environment have lead to and facilitate one of Kejora Bhd.’s division which is the Fabricator Division’s general manager named Adam. This case is all about Kejora Bhd.’s rules of conduct and its internal control system. There are basically four rules of conduct which is integrity, competency, objectivity and confidentiality to be joint with the Kejora case. What factors in KejoraBhd’s control environment have lead to and facilitated Adam’s manipulation of inventory? Based on the task, the factor that lead Adam to manipulate the inventory because he wants to avoid reduces of bonus and salary. Kejora Bhd’s procedure is to give salary depends on high performance of the staff. This lead Adam to manipulate the inventory which is considered as fraud. Adam does not have competency knowledge to compete with the competitor and Adam not integrity in his job. Furthermore, the other factor that lead Adam to do fraud is Kejora Bhd does not have an internal audit to control the environment. It helps Adam to do the fraud without any risk as there are no internal audit to found out the fraud. Morever, Kejora Bhd corporate intervention only occurred when planned result were not obtained. When Adam did fraud by showing constant or good profitability, so there won’t be corporate intervention occurred and it is a encouragement for Adam to manipulate the inventory. In addition to, Adam did fraud because he wants to get maintain performance to get compensator packages which can lead him to make fraud by increasing the performances constantly. The other factor is it easy to control the inventory as the inventory section is weak. This is because the no proper internal audit to maintain it. It can be see when Adam manipulates the inventory to show a constant profitability and avoid the salary and bonus. Besides that, the employee is not following the compliance which is the code of conduct. Adam does not follow the law of audit. Moreover, Adam does not have loyalty and ethical value on his job. According to this, Adam attitude will affects other employee in the firm. Furthermore, there is no participation by the those charged with governance of the entity. The top management should always take a part in the entity. But in this case the board of directors and audit is not very active. When they are not concern about their management, Adam as one of higher position officer in the company make own decision which excess of his limit which consider as fraud. More than that, this entity does not have an organize structure to perform the business. In this case, this entity does not have a proper internal audit and the board directors is not very active. Besides that, all the staff in the entity should be responsible in their authority. In this case, certain staff does not play their role properly as Adam does not play his role properly and this lead him to do fraud. The human resources not only responsible to hiring employee but also have to provide a practice to train employee. Eventhough the entity’s human resources have proper policies but Human Resources department forget to monitor employee which weak in code of conduct. Adam whom responsibly done his work for 7 years and finally lead to fraud because of weakness of management which give encourage to fraud. Conclusion Based on the case, there are several things that has to be put into consideration. First of all, the management and internal control as well as internal audits must be compliance to laws, procedures and policy of the company. In this case, Mr. Adam cannot manipulate the inventories as it is very unethical to his profession. Although the rationality of him doing that is because he is afraid that his salary and bonus will be reduced, he still must be compliance to the rules of conduct when doing his job. Here, we can see that the internal control is not very strong because the employees such as Mr. Adam are able to do things that can jeopardize the company’s reputation by altering its business records. Second, Kejora Bhd. must hire an internal audit to examine all the financial statements all the time. The board of directors and the audit committee should also be active and provide full participation on the management of kejora Bhd.
